What Are Therapeutic Roleplay Groups?
These small group sessions use tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) as a structured and engaging way for young people to build confidence, social skills, and emotional resilience.
In each session, young people take part in guided adventures where they create characters, solve problems together, and explore imaginative worlds. Using simple, flexible game systems, players might negotiate with a stubborn dragon, explore a mysterious town, or work as a team to overcome challenges.
Alongside gameplay, sessions can also include elements of:
Character creation and design
Drawing and artwork
Collaborative worldbuilding
Storytelling and creative problem-solving
Not every session is focused entirely on gameplay. The group is designed first and foremost as a safe, supportive space where young people can learn how to be in social situations at their own pace. This might include taking breaks from the game to talk, create, reflect, or simply spend time getting comfortable within the group.
These activities give young people multiple ways to express themselves — whether they enjoy talking, creating, imagining, or doing.
The group format provides a safe and supportive environment where young people can:
practise turn-taking and listening
build confidence speaking in a group
develop teamwork and cooperation
explore emotions through characters and stories
learn to manage frustration and uncertainty
Sessions are carefully facilitated to ensure that each young person feels comfortable, included, and able to participate at their own pace.
Groups are small (typically 3–5 players) and thoughtfully matched to suit different personalities, energy levels, and play styles.
How groups are selected
Age
We group young people within similar age ranges to support shared interests, communication styles, and developmental stages. While flexibility is sometimes possible, keeping ages close helps everyone feel more at ease and able to relate to one another.
Play Style & Structure
Different young people enjoy different types of sessions. Some prefer a calm, structured environment with clear turns and guidance, while others enjoy a more flexible, imaginative, and fast-paced style. Matching similar play styles helps reduce frustration and ensures everyone can engage comfortably.
Goals for Attending
Young people may attend for different reasons — such as building confidence, developing social skills, managing anxiety, or simply connecting with others who share similar interests. Grouping young people with similar goals helps create a shared sense of purpose and allows sessions to be shaped in a way that benefits everyone.
Interests & Experience
We consider each young person’s interests and any previous experience with tabletop roleplaying games. Some may be completely new, while others are more familiar with games like Dungeons & Dragons. Matching experience levels and interests helps everyone feel included and able to take part without feeling overwhelmed or held back.
